The customer is looking for a solution to apply counterbores to the mounting bores at the back of the headstock. The problem is that counterboring these bores from the front is very complicated.
The solution proposed by HEULE is the most efficient BSF (Back-spot-facer) tool.
A standard BSF tool with a working length of 50 mm has been selected.
Speed: 350 rpm, Cutting speed: vc 35 m/min.
Working feed: 0.04 mm/rev.
The tool has to be operated with internal coolant with a pressure of 20 bar minimum.
The customer's interest focussed on increasing the process capability as well as the reduction of tool procurement costs.
The use of BSF has enabled the customer to eliminate a post-production process step.
The old tool made high demands on the workpiece. The bore had to be reamed for the tool guidance although it was "only" a screw head countersink. Also, the requested counterbore diameter could not be reached because of the too big ratio. This entailed an addional operation step.
The customer is very satisfied by the result and the achieved time savings. The headstock leaves the machine readily processed. The need to give the headstock to an additional process step to obtain the nominal counterbore diameter is obsolete.
The BSF tool is not only more cost-effective than the competition but also process capable and maintenance-free.
