Counterboring tools are precision tools used to create a counterbore or a flat shoulder in a bore – for example, to accommodate screw heads. They are generally used after drilling to further machine an existing bore. HEULE counterboring tools are specially designed for back counterboring of bores, i.e. on the side opposite to where the tool enters. This can be done without turning the workpiece over or re-clamping it.

In backspotfacing, the tool is guided through the existing bore. As soon as it emerges on the back side of the workpiece, the blade folds out or rotates, creating the desired countersink on its return journey. Backspotfacer from HEULE (e.g. BSF) utilise this principle, thereby enabling backspotfaces without the need to turn the workpiece. The SOLO counterboring tool even allows both sides of the bore edges to be machined in a single operation.

The main advantage lies in the significantly shorter cycle time: as the workpiece does not need to be turned over or re-clamped, an entire process step is eliminated. This not only reduces lead time but also minimises the risk of errors caused by manual intervention. In serial production – for example, for gearbox housings or hydraulic blocks – this can lead to considerable cost savings.

In countersinking, a flat, level seating surface is created around a bore – typically for screw heads or nuts. Form countersinking, on the other hand, creates a conical or profiled recess. Form counterbores are also used for special profiles to match the head geometry. HEULE counterboring tools have applications for both types.

Back spotfacing is the ideal solution, particularly for hard-to-reach areas or complex geometries: the tool can be introduced into the bore from the top of the workpiece and creates the counterbore on its return stroke. The BSF is suitable for back spotfacing up to 2.3 x the bore diameter and is therefore a tried-and-tested solution, particularly in mechanical engineering and the automotive industry . The SOLO, on the other hand, operates reliably even with interrupted cuts and when machining bores from both sides. For very specific requirements, HEULE also develops customised counterboring tools.
